The written language and spoken language was separate until like the 1920s and the English translation of Genji Monogatari predates the first modern Japanese translation by like 20 years, the first 'modern' translation had to be re-translated again after they reformed the language. Re: Immigration, they are desperate to get people doing menial labor from overseas and depending on the prefecture some countries third worlders work better than others (the Philippines being more preferable than others due to their work ethic and general grasp of English).
