Density is always the most critical factor when it comes to effective public transport infrastructure, far more so than raw population count.
In terms of regional rail lines, the difference between the US and Europe is a little more complex. Towns and cities are more spread out in the US than Europe making train services between them less efficient. But the other factor of equal or even greater importance here is how the car was adopted into these two continents. In the US the car was adopted much quicker by the middle and lower classes than it was in Europe. Europe basically had a decade between the Great Depression and the start of WW2 where the economy was doing okay. Without demand these rail lines were forced to reduce services or shut down entirely.
Oh and airlines also made regional trains redundant. They were just so much faster than trains and airfare became cheaper and cheaper over the 20th Century. Maybe now that airports in the US suck so much there is an argument to bring back train travel but unless a high speed train network is built there is really no reason to not just drive to your destination if you can't be fucked dealing with an airport.

And then, this year, the radiator hose came of the radiator on a highway. It would total it for sure, if I didn't happen to pick that moment to take a leak on a gas station. Mended the shit, filled it with coolant and went on my marry way.
