The idea is really fun. The reality is if you plan on actually living and sleeping overnight in your van it will begin to smell awful in a matter of days. You won't notice it because it's your own sweat and body odor but outsiders will. And that doesn't even include how your clothes and bed sheets will smell.
Also, it fucking sucks after a while. Like, really fucking sucks. It's cramped and you have to keep up with van maintenance.
Also, pooping. Taking shits at camp ground toilets, gas stations, a bucket, or digging a hole in dirt to take a shit is miserable.
I can go on but you assholes don't care.

Depending on the location, you also need a small building to park the RV in during storms. Can't just be a cheap metal shack either. It's about as much as a home to get all set up (200-400 grand or so). At that point, just buy the home.

The old 1969 VW Van was good for that, affordable and cheap to drive and maintain, I still see lots of the Westfalia type VW vans around, they are underpowered and unsafe in collisions, but are a good size and mpg, price of gas now really cuts down on the van options, I see so many fewer big RVs on the road than 20 years ago, not many people are going on long road trips with 8mpg vehicles and 5$ gas

I worked with a guy who did this. His setup was pretty comfy but the fucking smells. His van stunk and he smelt bad 90% of the time. It wasn't filthy either he kept the place clean, it just had this musty, BO smell to it all the time.
