This was a fantastic happening for imageboards as a format. So much activity elsewhere, and while the activity will go down I hope to see an overall increase in users as people see that there are better communities places out there.

I think I will start treating Anon Babble like any other zombie site, using it entirely situationally with no attachment to its identity (one may ask "what identity?" but Anon Babble undoubtedly has an ethos, a self-denying/self-destructive one at that)

I finished putting mine up again a day before Anon Babble came back.
This down time did inspire me to work on the imageboard software some more.
The goal of it was to create an open source version of Anon Babble's yotsuba which its features and visuals are pretty close and before putting it back online I managed to get a scaled back version of Anon Babble's javascript extension working on it.
3chan dot co if anyone is interested in checking out the software.
I haven't tested Anon Babble-X on it but I'm sure once I get the API and extension fully working it will work with Anon Babble-X.

I hope altchans continue to do well and that more get setup.
The scene was less alive last time I checked which is a shame because I have sometimes seen more interesting boards and discussion on them compared to Anon Babble.

Things don't have to be so neurotic and bureaucratic and etc. We can be the change we want to see but it takes being serious about it (the privilege of forced commitment that downtime afforded all of us). I hope at least some generals/boards managed to spread out with lasting effects. This isn't over yet, we just reached the half-life of an interesting period

Common complaint about altchans is that they are "dead" but thats so stupid to say because they wouldn't be like that if you just post on them, you can't just expect every thread on altchans to be as fast as they are on Anon Babble.

most of the images on Anon Babble and Anon Babble have been dead/semidead (thumbnails broken AND some don't load the image at all) for a while before the hack...unless it's some problem on my end

I am aware and have had it happen in the past.
It was funny actually because they intended to wipe the board but got confused why threads weren't getting bumped off and it was just creating extra pages past 10.
Took them I think over 2 hours to attempt it on all boards when I looked at the post dates in the panel and took me 1 minute to delete it all once I noticed.

I think this was caused by the server crash/ultimate mod retardation that deleted the catalogs of a dozen boards. Some boards didn't have their catalogs deleted, but many files of its older threads were lost. Anon Babble has half of its catalog missing and Anon Babble has many threads with just the thumbnail.

sorry I didn't write my post very well, I mean the image problem was a thing for like ... 3 months maybe or more before the hack. As in, I remember going on Anon Babble and being pissed half the images in a thread (or at least thumbnails, but sometimes the images themselves too) were error'd. Again, not sure if it has anything to do with my XT or extensions but yeah. So unless they fucked up database way before the hack....idk

I always thought it ran on an old seperate version of the imgboard.php script and I was proven right.
The red "Marked for deletion (old)." text even appears on this board which is a sign of how old that code is because that doesn't even appear on the imageboards anymore because of a programming error.

I think post-return might actually see alts get more activity, at least if the regulars here come back and tell about why the alts are better. But they didn't really seem to be going up in activity over time, the people who needed chans got on them pretty quick and stayed and everyone else managed without. Maybe if Anon Babble was down for a month+ they'd get decent traffic but even then I think no one really KNEW they could move to alts/which to go to.

I'm more suprised the alts got as much (not much) activity as they did, considering no one ever really talked about them except an occasional complaining-about-Anon Babble thread or 'what alts do you like?' thread on Anon Babble or something once a blue moon. I only knew to go there because I bookmarked a bunch when the webring was "big".

In Swedish for example the day is always said before the month, but that doesn't mean I have to insist writing it out like that. It only makes sense to put the units in order of magnitude.

Ultimately this problem was caused by having insufficient skilled man-hours available to update our code and infrastructure

I would like to believe this is true, but reportedly the operating system was last updated in 2014 during the tenure of the previous proprietor prior to the transfer of ownership. If that is indeed the case, the failure to update software several years past deprecation could not be dismissed simply as a lack of resources, but instead attributed to a negligent or careless disregard at the hands of the reigning administrative team in my opinion.

Now, I'm not fully aware of all the details surrounding specific software versions. Possibly, it may be that even under the previous administrator the utilized PHP version was already out of date. However, given many of the reported details it appears to me under the previous administrator the website underwent regular maintenance and under the current administrator that practice ceased.
