The way we design space ships is super retarded. We make these thin little tin can ships. There are micrometeorites flying at extreme speeds in space which can punch a hole in your ship so easily. Plus there is no radiation shielding for the astronauts and no gravity. It's a nightmare.

What we should do, is capture large asteroids, and then hollow them out and fill them with living spaces and propulsion systems. From the safety of a big space rock, you can explore the universe but you need to bring this huge mass to protect your people from the environment. And it's gotta have a rotation which generates artificial gravity because as terrestrial beings we need gravity to function.

The only way that thin flimsy space ships, makes any sense is if you have the technology to make wormholes to warp directly from point A to point B and as far as I am aware, we don't have that technology yet. So for now we need big massive ships that can tank a few hits.
