Not totally unreasonable. The issue is that markets are so turbulent, and wages so low that the amount people can safely invest in isn't huge. If you put in too much you'll get wiped out in the next crash (usually accompanied with a layoff). Too little, and the payoff becomes insufficient to really change your circumstances. It's easy to say things like "he should have bought crypto" but the number of people who actually traded crypto and came out ahead is very small compared to those who lost money doing so. Lots of people who invested steadily got wiped out in 08; the shocks of that are still fresh in the mind of many, and nothing has been done to make it less likely to happen again.

Even with self driving trucks on the horizon (they're at least 5 years off if not more from public road usage) there will be plenty of work for drivers. Especially in terms of large deliveries within cities. Is your self driving truck going to be capable of backing into a yard with like 2 feet of clearance on either side with vehicles all around it moving, cutting it off etc while it has to basically jack knife itself in to back up?

There is a lot of kinks to work out there in terms of specific scenario driving. Truckers will be fine for some time.
