I think it has diminished over the years for me so now it's much weaker than it used to be. I also rarely dream anymore, which I think might be related.

This can't be real. How can your head be empty of images? You see things and have a memory of them, therefore you save images in your head. If you can do that, then you can also recreate those images on demand, change them, or come up with new ones from their foundation. No way this is an actual thing.

An example: when I was learning to type, I would visualize a keyboard in my head when laid down and could see the keyboard and identify where the keys were, it is I guess like photographiuc memory but you're visualizing rather than remembering.

In my experience people will usually answer very quickly with 'red' or 'green', which probably has something to do with their preference in apples. In my case the answer is 'I don't know' since I wasn't given any information about its colour. There's no quasi-image for me to get that feedback from.

i think that in many cases, the problem is that people are taking these words too literally. you don't 'see it' you visualize it in your imagination. you can sort of 'see' the object, sure, but it's not like watching a movie or looking at a picture. it's more ethereal than that. it's in your mind's eye. i can do all sorts of complicated visualizations in my mind and i think that most people can too. then again, with some people the way that they think is different and other parts of their brains are dominant, especially people who 'think' in words. can you explore a concept in your mind without words? can you act on instinct without any words or pictures at all? of course, we all can. we all have these mental abilities to various degrees. the idea that one person is 'smarter' than another is exceptionally biased toward however you define smartness. we all have our unique gifts and there is a lot of variance when you compare the brains of different people.

It seems like visual imagination uses up some of the ressources used in visual processing, so it's hard (but possible) to do both at once.
In essence it's an extra effort to insert it into your visual field image while also processing that actively.
