I manage a team of IT professionals. They're all over 5 years tenure with the company so literally zero supervision needed. I get bonuses for team performance when literally all I do is make flowcharts of processes and do monthly 1-on-1s. The best part is they are in-office and I'm 100% work from home. Shit is awesome.

It wasn't always like that. We grew from a startup to over $1b in revenue to per year. Back when the position was open nobody wanted it because there were not documented or set processes or procedures. Everything was done custom and "whatever gets the sale and the software installed". My role was being deprecated so I took the manager role. Over a couple years I was able to get our platform teams aligned and built out full end-to-end processes, including exceptions like change requests, documented escalation paths, etc. Then it was hiring internally into the team with the most competent people.

So it wasn't getting hired into a cushy role, but building everything over the course of 2 years. Documenting every possible divergent path, and putting people into the team that work independently.

So while technically speaking yeah probably anyone could do the role, they won't know why things are done the way they are, and I retained full control over backend automations that exist as essentially "black boxes" that nobody understands or even wants to understand. As long as it works.
