(A bit after, but still...) the movie is and was a classic because it showed characters looking beyond their cliques, making friends with people outside of their circles without fear of what other people would think of them.

It isn't no reason, it's a direct observation of how people are when isolated from their in-group. The Fast Times show is superior to the movie. Most of the show's cast is superior to the movie.

Because it depicts teenagers as they truly are: amorphous underdeveloped sketches of people. They go with the role they were defined in because it's at least an identity.
