It just went through a hollowing out due to fancy GUI controllers and SDN, AND it has a potential to get gutted by AI in 5-10 years, maybe even sooner. They just need to get the hallucinations down. Used to be just a CCNA and a home lab would cut it, but now it's CCNP + cloud + security + sys admin shit + scripting/python/SDN/YANG skills and 3 years of experience to get a junior level job paying 55k a year. And since they need less engineers now to do the same amount of work, there's a glut of CCIE level people in mid-level roles. There used to be NOC jobs to break into the field, but good fucking luck finding one, let alone getting one since everyone had the same idea: "well everything else is fucked, let's go into networking!". You literally NEVER stop learning off the clock, and you're on call 24/7 until you're an architect, and you're expected to be a cert master so you won't have a life outside of work. And since a lot of shit moved off prem it's dying. Worst part? The pay is shit. You could take any other job in tech, maybe in the fucking world, and create a "knowledge/skills to pay" ratio, and networking will be the absolute worst. It is far more complicated than it was 20 years ago and the pay is a lot lower.
