chickens are super easy and cheap. the most important thing is to protect them from predators because everything eats chickens. if you plan on free ranging them get more than you want because some of the dumber ones will get picked off. i have barred rock chickens and i think they are best. they are calm, friendly and lay 6 eggs a week each

Try to find locals to barter with, if you don't already. Finding local, good quality milk is something you could do.
Buy lentils and spelt grains from US farmers in bulk. This and milk (home made yogurt) are the bulk of your needs. Supplement with fresh veg and produce from your own garden year 'round

i have a 40'x70' fenced in garden also, 15 fruit trees, 10 grape vines and am going to get meat rabbits as soon as i can find some for sale. i also am growing a little patch of wheat and buckwheat (approx 20'x20' each). working on propagating more grape vines. yesterday i found a wild white mullberry tree right by my mailbox. i have a very small solar setup but use line power because its cheap. if power goes out i will live like the olden days. i want to sell my extra car and have a pond made so i can raise frogs and fish.
