OP, that's a shitty calculator. Here's the state of the art calculator in 1968. It cost a small fortune but could be more accurately described as a computer. In fact it supported self-modifying code and supported a card reader / writer, so programs and data can be of any arbitrary length.
It was in fact HP calculators which were used in high-tech research, this was before computer workstations were even a thing really. You'd punch a program onto punch cards and send it in and wait for results more generally in that era. Despite its antique build, it's still quite quick compared to many modern pocket calculators.
